An Introduction
to Saints A
storybook by
Sarah Schafer
St. Anthony the Great
Growing up at an Episcopal church, I gained an understanding to
the significance that Saints play. Yet, I wanted to learn to
what extent certain Saints tied into religion, and wanted to better
understand the worth of the Saints. Most of us are familiar with
Saint Patrick, but little of us actually know that he hates
snakes. Story four of my storybook discusses this fact. I
decided to do a Storybook
project over this topic to learn about Saints, as well as to see them
in art pieces. Although my major has nothing to do with art, I
have always been interested in art. If I had time I would want to
minor in Art History. My storybook is formated to tell a story of
each
pictured Saint using different writing techniques. The story of
Saint Luke is told from the viewpoint of an ox. The ox is
pictured in the painting of Saint Luke, and is a symbol of St.
Luke. The images of each of my stories are
very distinct, and the way of depicting each Saint will vary from
picture to
picture. Some Saints are pictured individually while others are
performing their "talents", and still others are seen with
extraordinary backgrounds.
I never had a bible or religious course in my
education thus far, and that may be why I am drawn to this topic.
It is different from the normal projects that I typically have to do in
my coursework. I am amazed at the web skills that I
developed from this class, and know that the many techniques I learned
will help me with future projects. Each chapter in my storybook
contains an art piece that caught my attention. I carefully
chose each piece, and hope that others will enjoy them as well.
The narrarator changes for each story told, depending
on who else in the piece. Some paintings contain animals or other
people that tell the story of the Saint. The story of Saint Roch
is told by a dog because St. Roch happens to be the Saint of dogs and
dog lovers.
This Storybook Project is for a Mythology and
Folklore class that I am currently taking, and I think this project is
relevant
to the class not only because of the pieces of art, but also because of
the topic of Saints. Saints can teach important life lessons, and
can be inspiration for people. For instance, St. Francis and the
Birds talks about the devotion that St. Francis had for God and his
walk to glorify him. I don't think that this Storybook
will interest all people, but hopefully those who are interested in
Saints and their purposes will use this to learn more about how these
Saints impact religion. If the Saints do not interest you, maybe
the art pieces will! The painting of Saint Thomas and Saint
Andrew has so much depth and emotion in it. If I am still holding
your interest, I
invite
to check out the rest of my Storybook! Follow along and let the
Saints and their friends tell their stories!
If you come across any questions you might have I encourage you to use
the email link to email me! Hopefully I will be able to answer
the questions that you have. These stories come from different
sources. Each picture and text used will be referenced at the
bottom of each page. If you have questions about these things
please check the pages that they came from. My stories are twists
from the original pieces, but most of the information will stay the
same. Thanks for your interest!
