Interlibrary Loan Management Systems have been available for several years. Their
functionality and efficiency continues to improve. As the volume of interlibrary
loan requests continue to increase without a matching increase in ILL staff, these systems
can improve efficiency and increase the speed of the interlibrary loan process.
- Questions to consider when selecting a system:
- How much will it cost? Costs often vary depending on the volume of requests
processed by the purchasing library.
- How much of your work will be automated? How close will you be to a paper-free
interlibrary loan process?
- What is the workflow and how will that fit with your local situation and needs?
- How does it handle the particular needs of public libraries, including such issues as
customers without email addresses, the need for printed notification and cancellation
notices, and multiple branch pickup locations, as well as any particular local needs?
- How difficult will it be to train branch staff to check out material in the new program
and how much can you limit their ability to make changes to the system beyond check out
and check in? Will it cost more to add the software at each branch? If you
don't intend to use the system at branches, how will that impact your workflow? What
accommodations can be made?
Make sure to ask questions until you clearly understand what the system can do and what
it cannot. |
