My name is Walter Shields. I'm a first-year MBA student in the Price College of Business...but don't assume you can guess my whole story from there!
Actually, I came to the field of business in a rather roundabout way. It's true that for the past five years I have worked for Midland Mortgage Co. in Oklahoma City, where I started out writing letters, then moved on to help manage the Customer Service call center, and finally became a financial analyst, preparing departmental financial statements and productivity and control reports for in-house use. But it was rather a long road getting there. At 31, I'm one of the oldest students in the full-time program, and I probably also have one of the longest and most varied histories in terms of what I have done to support myself financially over the past thirteen years.
My MIS professor states that a personal website "can be an important means by which you present yourself...to employers, potential employers, clients and others." I don't doubt this, and portions of this website will endeavor to present those things about me that are relevant to my chosen career path. However, given my rather rudimentary knowledge of HTML, I couldn't think of any intrinsically interesting way to present the dry facts of my business persona using the tools and features we're expected to incorporate. Therefore, most of my links and multimedia features have to do with one small aspect of my life: my travels in Europe, and especially the time I spent in France during the 1994-95 school year as a teaching assistant in the Lycee Voillaume in Aulnay-sous-Bois.
Click on the map below to read about my year in France, and also about my brief visits to Italy and the U.K.
And now, for no particularly good reason, here are my three visits to countries in Europe organized in table form!
| Country | When visited |
|---|---|
| France | 9/94-5/95 |
| Italy | 2/03 |
| U.K. | 3/95 |
But enough about me...sign my guestbook and tell me a little about yourself!
Sign guestbook.I'll bet by this point you're saying to yourself, "Gee, I sure would like to see a list of some kind in this website, be it undordered, ordered, or definition." Well, I aim to please.
How about "unordered"?(Technically, these are in roughly chronological order.)
Things Walter has done for a living:
Here are links to other websites that I have found useful in my current line of work. I need to warn you that, unlike my little travelogue and bio, these are strictly business!
First there's my employer, the incredible, the amazing, the spine-tinglingly bold and exciting MidFirst Bank of Oklahoma City! Check out our great rates on mortgage refinancing, home equity loans, home equity lines of credit, and auto and consumer loans.
Next up is a great site for first-time homebuyers or people looking for a little investment property. If you're looking to buy a foreclosed home, you could do a lot worse than First Preston. My wife and I very nearly bought a house we found on this site..until a tip from a friend got us interested instead in the up-and-coming Denniston Park neighborhood. Three years later, and I'm VP of the neighborhood association!
I hope you have enjoyed this little romp through my personal life! Though at first the idea of this project struck me as just another onerous burden taking up yet another large block of my extremely limited spare time, serving no other purpose than to show how little I could possibly have learned about HTML in so brief a period of instruction, I have to admit I have actually had a little fun with it! Moreover, I evidently picked up on HTML better than I initially thought I did (wouldn't take much)! Indeed (it shocks me to say) I would truly enjoy working some more on this site at some point to make it more presentable and more fun to visit. All it takes is being forced to get out there and attempt it, and a person can make a surprising amount of progress. Hats off to Dr. Laku for driving this point home!
