Whether
you are repulsed or
fascinated, these urban legends regarding medicine and the human body
will
shock you and make you wonder if they could be true or not! For years
and years
people have been flocking to movie theatres to watch horror films that
contain nothing
but blood, gore, and guts. For what
reason? Simple: it is thrilling to be
scared when you know there is no real threat at all…and it can get your
adrenaline pumping. Urban legends can
be strange, creepy, and even comical.
No one wants to fathom the possibility of the legend being true,
but in
the back of your mind it is always a possibility. Even
if the legend sounds completely absurd, at least you can get
a good laugh out of it.
I have chosen to do my
storybook over medical urban legends because my future aspirations are
to be a
member of the healthcare system. Hopefully in my career I won’t have to
deal
with any of these crazy stories I’m going to share, but they are still
fun to
read! Even if your major isn’t in the
health field I think you will find these stories are hard to resist! Everyone should be able to relate since I am
sure at one time or another you have been to the hospital or to the
doctor’s
office.
The human body can
surprise you and I find it to be extremely interesting. I took
Cadaver
Anatomy last fall and learned so many fascinating things. But, previous
science
classes are not required to enjoy these urban legends.
In fact, you really don’t need any
background information at all. Most of the stories I have heard and
will retell
are about basic body parts that everyone knows (and has!).
They don’t include difficult medical jargon
that can be confusing to understand.
Urban legends have been fascinating for
centuries. It is not a mystery why. People are curious to
read about the unexplainable. Like fables and many of the myths we read
in class, urban legends can teach lessons about what you should and
shouldn't do. Although everyone may not enjoy this topic as much
as I do, how can you resist the shock value?
And so it begins...
The narrator of
this story is an OU medical student completing her residency at a
hospital on the outskirts of town (aka: the middle of nowhere).
Working her third graveyard shift in a row and functioning on very
little sleep, weird things are bound to happen...
