Black Agnes

Maddie asks politely, "Can you please tell me another story, Mommy?"

The mother replies, "It is getting late, Maddie. I don't think it is a good idea."

"Oh pretty please, will you tell me another story, Mommy?" asks Maddie.

The mother answers, "Okay, Maddie, but you are going to bed right after I tell you this story. You might not even be able to go to sleep after I tell you this story, though."

Maddie asks, "Is the story really that scary, Mommy?"

The mother answers with a smile, "Yes, the story is very scary."

The mother begins to tell the story. The story takes place in Norman, Oklahoma. It all started one night when a group of teenage girls were thinking of what to do that night. The girls were in a sorority called Alpha Phi. The girls wanted to do something exciting that night, so they called up their new pledges.

"What are pledges, Mommy?" asks Maddie.

"Pledges are girls who want to be in the sorority," answers the mother.

The mother then begins telling the story again. So the girls were all bored that very night so they decided to have a little fun with their new pledges. The girls made the pledges stay in a deserted cemetery for two hours. One by one the girls stayed at the cemetery for two hours, but when it was the last pledge's turn to stay in the cemetery for two hours, the girls decided to just make the pledge stay the whole night. The pledge was very scared to go into the cemetery. The Pledge's name was Jennifer McGee's and she always thought cemeteries were very creepy and she never wanted to stay the night at the cemetery, but she really wanted to join the sorority. Jennifer knew this was an initiation and if she passed then she would definitely be in the sorority.

Maddie interrupts and says, "I would never stay the night at a cemetery, Mommy."

The mother laughs and replies, "Oh, I wouldn't either, Maddie."

So Jennifer then went into the cemetery, and then the sorority girls left. The girls told Jennifer to stay the night at the cemetery and that the next morning, the girls would return to come get her. Jennifer was definitely scared, but she knew she had to stay the night. She saw a statue nearby of a woman with her hands outstretched. Jennifer thought that the statue looked very sad, like if she was heartbroken. The girl then crawled into the statue's arms to sleep since it would be more comfortable to sleep in the statue's arms than on the ground. The very next morning, the sorority girls came back to the cemetery to get Jennifer back, but when they tried waking her, she didn't wake up. The girls realized that she was dead and they all screamed and ran for help. When the police came to inspect the body, they saw that the girl had marks on her body as if the statue's arms were holding on to her. There was a reporter who wrote a story about Jennifer's death in the University of Oklahoma school newspaper and the reporter found out some very interesting facts. Turns out that the statue's name was Agnes and the story goes that Agnes was cheated on and dumped by her fiance and she died of a broken heart. Her grave was marked with a statue of herself sitting with her arms stretched out. The strange thing is that when the reporter looked up the fiance, the reporter found out that the fiance's name was Charles McGee and that Jennifer was a direct descendant of the fiancé. Was Agnes trying to get her revenge on the pledge for what her ancestor did? That is the question that is on everyone’s mind.

"The end," says the mother.

"That story was very scary, Mommy. I don't think I can go to sleep anymore," says Maddie.

The mother replies, "Well, you are going to have to go to sleep anyways."

"But, Mommy, you just told me a really scary story and I can't go to sleep now. You might as well tell me another scary story," begs Maddie.

"Okay Maddie, but this is the last one. You are going to sleep after this one. I saved the best story for last," says the mother.

Maddie replies,"Okay Mommy, I promise."

Author's Note: In the original story of Black Agnes, it did not specify what sorority the girls were in and what they were planning to do with the pledges. Also in the original story, the story takes place in an old deserted cemetery in West Virginia. I made the story take place in Norman, Oklahoma. In the original story, it was not mentioned why the girls wanted the pledges to stay the night at the cemetery besides for the initiation. I wanted to add the part where the girls were bored and decided to have a little fun with the pledges to make it more realistic to show the hazing part of initiation and how wrong it is. The initiation in the original story was to stay the whole night there in the deserted cemetery, but I changed that to staying in the cemetery for two hours. I had the last girl stay the whole night though instead of staying two hours. There were no cops mentioned in the original story and there was no reporter who ran a story for a University of Oklahoma newspaper about the accident. I added that part to make the story seem more realistic because the story took place in Norman. I also wanted to add the reporter because I wanted to explain the back story of Agnes and how her fiancé was related to the victim.
