Introduction
Have
you ever
thought about who you
would be in another life? Reincarnation is a belief you
can find in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism along with some
ancient religions that are no longer practiced, such as
Pythagoreanism. My focus is on Hinduism and its
description of reincarnation. In Hinduism, the process of
reincarnation involves samsara, nirvana and karma. Samsara is the
continuous
cycle of death and rebirth. Nirvana is the extremely desirable state in
which someone is finally liberated from this cycle. Karma is the sum of
one's actions and the force that determines one's next reincarnation.
Karma governs the cycle of death and rebirth.
During
reincarnation,
people survive death and are reborn into a new body. A new
personality develops in the new body but some part of the
spirit remains constant throughout their lives. An example of
reincarnation is best described through a quote by
Bhagavad-Gita " a person puts on new garments, giving up old
ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old
and useless ones." The cycle of rebirth does not involve only
humans; even the gods can be reborn as humans. I will strictly be
talking about gods
incarnate as humans.
In the Ramayana,
the gods Vishnu and Lakshmi are reincarnated as the main characters
Rama and Sita.
When gods take on a human incarnation, that human being is
considered an avatar of the god. Rama is considered an avatar of the
god Vishnu, because he is a human incarnation of that god. Vishnu is an
example of an
avatar because he incarnates himself as prince Rama. My
stories will be about avatars because they have adventurous stories
that have intriguing themes.
The
first story I will cover is the first meeting of Rama and Sita. From
the first moment Rama and Sita make eye contact they immediately
connect. After seeing each other neither could function normally. This
illustrates the link between Rama and Sita as more than love. They are
soul mates reincarnate. Lakshmi was the soul mate
of the god Vishnu, so just as
Lakshmi was joined with Vishnu in heaven, Sita was joined with Rama on
earth. This story emphasizes the already existing love between Rama
and Sita before they were reincarnated as humans. This conveys the
idea that love is a strong and eternal force.
My second story involves the realization of
Rama that he is the incarnation of Vishnu. Rama does not seem to pay
attention to how different he is from other men, his strength
especially. During the final battle between Ravana and Rama, he must be
told that is Vishnu and has all his powers in human form. Rama must be
told many times that he is a great ruler and carries truth in his
heart. The clues in the story are very important and help Rama come to
the realization. I think this story is important in that the
realization of the incarnation of the character is a defining moment in
his human life. This moment connects the epic and puts Rama's life
together like a puzzle. This is an example of Vishnu's role in the
lives of men, as Rama is sent to better the world.
The third story is about a
character's
realization of their own incarnation and a divine connection. krishna
is the incarnation of vishnu, and in a former life, was closely
connected with Arunja. however, arunja can remember nothing of his past
life. krishna slowly helps him remember the past. Krishna and arunja
have a connection that is sensed throughout the mahaharta, but arunja
does not learn why until krishna tells him. this story explains
arujna's realization and provides a better understanding of divine
connections. krishna and arujna complete each other, not in a romantic
way but in a brotherly way. this re-telling will help the reader see
the strength of eternal bonds.
The fourth story is of how
ganga became a woman. It parallels the first story of Rama and
Sita and the idea of soul mates. my story shows ganga's struggle
of understanding love and wanting something she cannot have. Vishnu
helps ganga realize that she cannot look for love, love must find her.
Ganga has a catharsis when she first meets Mahabhisha's eyes. This
shows a transformation in ganga. She remained patient and waited for
love to find her. Ganga and Mahabhisha were joined in heaven and earth.
Their characters set off a number of events that follow their rebirth
and create the mahabharata.
"But
wait, I hear Visvamitra's voice telling Rama and Lakshmana about their
next adventure in Mithila..."
